Welcome to

Panquin Cemetery

Brief History

This cemetery came to fruition in the early 1900s and we believe the name "Panquin" came from some people who sharecropped near this area and was probably buried here.  The cemetery was established for families who lived and grew up in this area.  The trustees of the cemetery have changed hands over the years, with Mr. Clinton Key overseeing it for over 40 years.  A few years ago (2017) a new organization was formed to carry on the maintenance  of the cemetery due to it had become too much for just one person tackle.  New bylaws and rules were set up to help facilitate good business practices and to get more of the community involved.  We are very proud of our cemetery and believe it to be one of the prettiest and well maintained cemeteries around.  We hope the community is pleased with it as well.  The board is always here to help if you need us.

Annual Meeting

Our annual business meeting is held the 2nd Monday in June at the Grant Town Hall.  We use this time to elect new board members (if their term has expired), go over recent cemetery activities and review the general income and expenses for the cemetery.

The public is welcome to attend.

Setting Tombstones

Please make sure the company you purchase your tombstone from knows to get in touch with a cemetery board member before they come to install it.  There's lots of measuring and aligning that has to be done - besides the liability that goes along with these companies pulling heavy equipment into the graveyard.

Fall Clean-up Day

The first Saturday in November of each year the cemetery board and community volunteers meet at the cemetery to do a cleanup and general maintenance of the cemetery and grounds.  We would love for you to join us, reach out to a board member for more details.

Volunteers

We welcome volunteers to help out at the cemetery.  There's a lot to do (spray for ants, pick up flowers that have blown off, pick up debris, etc.) and we try to do most of this ourselves to keep the cost minimal.  If you are interested in helping, let us know.

Veterans at Panquin

We have several veterans buried at Panquin.  We are proud of the time they spent for our country and we try to give them a little bit of special honor on Decoration Day.  We place an American Flag on each of their graves to show our care and support for them.  However, we are continually updating our veteran's list  - if  we have missed someone - it was not on purpose.  If you have a veteran buried at Panquin and do not see a flag on their grave during decoration weekend, please let us know so we can add them to our list and honor them as well.

Panquin Cemetery Book

One of our board members, Theresa McBride, spent countless hours compiling a book on the history of the cemetery and gravesite  information in 2020; this book was updated in 2023.   The  latest book is $50.00 each and if you are interested in getting one, please email us at panquincemetery@gmail.com or theresamcbride@comcast.net

Thank you!
